Wheaton, O Wheaton (60187)

I grew up somewhere between
the two cent Mary Janes
along the narrow, sticky aisle
of The Popcorn Shop
and the 63 churches
within its 11 square miles.
In Wheaton, the courthouse
built a memorial for the men lost
in many wars-
right next to sparkling waters
and a metal sundial.

In 1871, the first building
for county offices, county  jail,
and courtrooms
was built in the center of the town.
Known as The Midnight Raid,
three civil-war veterans
and a horse-drawn wagon
wavered down Naperville-Wheaton Road

and stole the county records. Still missing,
in the Great Chicago Fire
are the deeds of Warren & Jesse Wheaton.
